What is jack fruit?

The jackfruit grows on a large tree and is part of the breadfruit family. The main characteristic of Jackfruit is its hard spiked exterior and soft mushy fruit inside. It can grow quite big and can produce fruit as much as 40 to 50 kg.

You can eat jackfruit either ripe or cook it as a vegetable. When it’s ripe, the pulp inside the jackfruit turns yellow and contain large seeds inside it that are also edible.

What is Durian fruit?

Durian fruit is a spiked fruit almost the same size as coconut or cantaloupe. At first glance, durian looks like a jackfruit with its sharp spike green exterior and yellowish smooth pulp inside it. Like Jackfruits, the durian is native of Southeast Asia.

Both durian and jackfruit are tropical fruit have a strong unpleasant smell, and durian is known as the stinkiest fruit in the world.

What’s the difference between jackfruit and durian?

Jackfruit vs Durian: smell

Jackfruit and durian have a strong smell. The ripe jackfruit smell like bubble gum due to a large amount of sugar present in its pulp. Its aroma is like a combination of banana, pineapple, and onion.

Durian smell is quite different than jackfruit as it has a strong odour. Durian, when opened, smells like rotten egg or onion. This is mainly due to a large number of Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSC) present in the durian.

Jackfruit vs Durian: size

Jackfruit is much larger than durian as it can grow up to 90 cm compared to 18 cm for durian. Jackfruit tree grows up to 25 m tall while durian tree is less than 18 m. The Jackfruit can weigh up to 50 kgs, while the durian fruit weighs up to 15 kgs.

Jackfruit vs Durian: taste

Ripe jackfruit has a sweet, tropical fruit flavor that works well as a snack or added to sweet dishes. When ripe, it tastes like other tropical fruits, such as banana, mango or pineapple.

Jackfruit is a lot sweeter than durian.

When picking out a durian fruit to buy, locals will first smell it, the stronger it smells, the better it will taste! And what does it really taste like? Durian lovers say it has a sweet, custardy taste, with the texture of creamy cheesecake. Flavors often attributed to the durian fruits are caramel and vanilla. Jackfruit vs Durian: appearance

Durian has bigger spikes on it’s skin compared to the spikes found on the skin of a jackfruit. Jackfruit typically grows to be much larger in size than durian.
